Swift Sterling Loans

Intro…

Swift Sterling was acquired by MMP Financial Ltd in November 2015, with trading following in December. The company was originally brought to market in 2010 by the controversial Malta-based Northway Financial Ltd. It isn’t quite clear why the sale went ahead, but we believe that Northway wasn’t granted with permission to attain a new licence with the FCA. Another company called Pounds Till Payday was included in the deal. This was Northway’s original local project composed in 2006. It come to our attention recently that Pounds Till Payday has changed to brokering (via RU Media UK Ltd). On further inspection, this is actually a front for MMP who chose to withdraw this historic yet underperforming asset from lending.

Smart-Pig Loans

Intro…

Smart-Pig was launched in early 2012 by Shreiff Benaziza and Tom Parks. Start-up occurred during the time that they were studying at university. They became inspired to develop their own student-only service after a bad previous experience with a payday lender. Qualification is strictly open to those who receive an income from NHS Bursary, SAAS or Student Finance. This kind of exclusivity could be seen as a limiting factor, but this brand has certainly proved the doubters wrong. Recent Alexa traffic data shows that they are top 5 ranked for payday firms and top 10 for instalment firms. They are even edging out such heavy hitters as Satsuma Loans and WageDayAdvance.

PiggyBank Loans

Intro…

DJS (UK) Ltd was setup in April 2012 and in the same month they got to work on PiggyBank. In those early days they crafted a peer-to-peer payday loan alongside their competitor The Lending Well. This concept didn’t work out, but rather than drop out (as The Lending Well did) they simply adapted to lend out of their own pocket. DJS are a very tech driven organisation with various projects on the go such as the BeFriend app, Leadtree Global and White Label Finance Solutions. They did broker as My Financial Broker that has since closed. There was also a trading name of Aeroplane Loans on their FCA page, but this isn’t active either.

CashFloat Loans

Intro…

CashFloat is the central lending arm of Western Circle Ltd active both locally and in Spain. The London-based owner that was established in 2011 also operates as Payday Loans Net, PeraLoans (also in Spain) and Quick Loans Express. Western is a modest operation, having helped 20,000 people, but their main company has still emerged as a top 10 payday loan brand in just the space of a few years. Instalment terms are also now targeted, but much of their business is made up in the payday sector thanks to CashFloat’s impressive search engine rankings in this niche. The owner’s other projects haven’t enjoyed the same search traction, although newly formed PDNet is expected to progress well in 2018.

Auden Loans | www.auden.co.uk Reviews

Auden Loans

Intro…

Uberima was launched in late 2014. This company flew under the radar not making quite an impact. They opted to start over in 2017 and did so using the more catchy Auden brand. This is a Manchester-based for profit social enterprise intent on delivering affordable credit to those underserved and overcharged. This is not the first company to arrive with big ambitions to take on the major brands. Fair Finance and My Home Finance (now closed) went down this road, but low pricing hasn’t evidently been enough on its own. The top 10 instalment firms all rank within 30,000 (local Alexa) and so heavy ad spends be that through TV or web ads are essential to battle for business.

Cash Asap Loans

Intro…

Cash Asap has been in business since the year 2012. The owner (Apfin Ltd) lends through this single company, but they have recently created a new brokerage project (styled CLEARandFAIR). We checked this out and it was still under development. Asap’s growth has been steady over the years. They have flew under the radar that is a shame as their flexible short term loans are well packaged, serving as an ideal Wonga alternative. Flexibility is a key feature delivered in the amounts and terms. Their service is available across weekends and they have an interesting promotion called #PriceCheck that hands incentive to those that at least see if they can get approved for a loan.

WageDayAdvance Loans

Intro…

WageDayAdvance is one of the UK’s longest running online lenders active since 2004. The business was formed by former pawnbroker Dale Chapman who successfully ran the company over the course of a decade. WDA helped to put Skipton on the map, but they have now passed on to American hands with Curo Financial Technologies taking control in early 2013. They had previously operated as Speedy Group Holdings Corp who most people will be familiar with through their Speedy Cash outlets that existed for a few years on the high street before being pulled. They now have around 300 locations across Canada and United States. Locally, Juo Loans was recently launched as a supporting brand (guarantor/personal).

Fernovo Loans

Intro…

Fernovo is a fresh newcomer for the 2017 year, released by Quidie Ltd who are otherwise known for Quidie Online Lending that has been active since 2015. The owner in fact started up back in June 2012 and so they certainly took their time to get up and running. Quidie’s initial market progress was good, but they soon began to fade out. Google Trends data however shows a recent spike in popularity across 2017 and now we have also seen Fernovo’s recent launch that highlights the owner’s raised ambitions. This new company has some impressive product features, but it is their low interest rate that stands out the most at just 0.5% daily.

QuickQuid Loans

Intro…

QuickQuid is the 2nd largest payday lender on the UK market today. This heavyweight brand has been active since 2007 marking a full decade in operation. This company was unleashed by Cash America International Inc who have since passed on ownership duties to Enova International Inc who were a past division. As well as this central lending operation, they trade as On Stride Financial and Pounds to Pocket. They deliver longer term products, whilst shorter term borrowing has always been packaged up here. There is a headlined 1.4 million customer base (a much smaller active tally would be expected). Following the trend of recent years, they continue to be one of the most visible brands promoted on TV.

Wonga Loans | www.wonga.com Reviews

Wonga Loans

Intro…

The market leader has enjoyed a remarkable decade in operation. Their initial approach was to sidestep the big payday firms at the time (PaydayUK & QuickQuid) to deliver a more flexible alternative. This early innovation helped spur on growth and they would soon take advantage by taking promotion to the next level, as seen from their past triple kit sponsorship of Blackpool, Hearts and Newcastle. The past few years have however been very troubling through capping, fines and write-offs. It seemed like they really hit a brick wall when they reported a loss after tax of £76.5 million across 2015. Despite this, they have managed to steer the ship back into the right direction, maintaining their #1 status.
